The Department of English Language and Literature began work towards the end of 1996 and started its academic programs in January 1997.

The Department recognizes the importance of English in today's world of Education, industry, commerce and international communication.English serves as broad window to most field of knowledge and to our understanding of the present world.

The total curriculum is designed to give the student competence in using English as a language for both academic non-academic purposes, to enable him to read, appreciare and analyze imaginative writing and to put his knowledge of Western thought and achievement into a truly Islamic perspective.The program should foster a lifelong habit of mind that is disciplined, dispassionate and independent and should cultivate the ability to discern and dscriminate between what is truly valuable and what is not.The Department pays special attention to the following:

  • the students language needs.

  • arrangement for remedial measures.

  • extensive and intensive exposure to English.

  • emphasis on spoken English.

  • emphasis on written English for different situations.

  • regular monitoring of the student's progress.

  • close personal supervision.

  • guided studies

  • regularity of work.

  • oppertunity to improve grades

  • weekly extra-curricular activities.

  • maintaining a congenial atmosphere.

  • healthy cooperation among all.

  • development of a clear understanding of Islam.

Programs Offered

The Programs Offered by the Department are:

Bachelor of Arts(Honours)- 4 years
Master of Arts- 1 year
Diploma in English Language-1 year

Academic Year: The academic year of the Institute is divided into three semesters:

A student is required to obtain a minimum of 2.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 4.0 scale for the award of the BBA.

Location and Facilities

At present both the Department of Law housed at House# 39/A, Raod# 8, Dhanmondi R/a, Dhaka-1209 which is located in a most convenient, easily accessible place to come from all parts of Dhaka City. This building is elegant and furnished with modern fittings. Library, reading room and all labs are located in this building with modern teaching and laboratory facilities required to run high-standard academic and research programs. The Depts. have the following features:

  1. All classrooms are air-conditioned having facility of OHP & Multimedia projection
  2. Computer laboratories with broadband internet connection & multimedia projection system.
  3. Departmental library is furnished with a large number of text and reference books and magazines.
  4. Flexible class schedules for the professionals.
  5. A common room with indoor games
  6. Other logistics & support services.

 

Medium of Instruction: The medium of instruction for all academic programs in the Institute of Business Studies in English.

 

Teaching Staff: The teaching staff of the faculty may be of the following categories:

  1. Regular Teaching Staff: Full time Regular teaching staff members in the rank of Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers are appointed by the Vice-chancellor as per recommendations of the Selection Committee, with the Syndicate approval.

  2. Adjunct Teachers: Academicians, trainers of professional institutes and professionals of various educational establishments with appropriate teaching and training experience are invited to teach different courses of the Department on honorarium basis. They are considered adjunct faculty members.

  3. Visiting Teachers: Visiting Teachers are drawn from renowned Institutions and Universities both at home and abroad on exchange and contract basis for a fixed term.

Student's intake in the Undergraduate course: Students are usually admitted both in the Spring and Fall Semesters.
